About Me

About me

I'm Emrys. I'm an artist and a huge nerd, both in every way I can manage. I grew up in the Bay Area and lived there for most of my life, then moved down to Southern California midway through 2025, where I now live with friends and my cat, Sasha.

About my art

Film has been my main artistic medium since I was 12 years old, and most of my projects have been done with Gabriel Studer-Randall, my friend and co-creator of Seventh Direction Films. Short documentaries have been my main focus since 2021, about everyone from performance artists to my grandmother. I also co-produced and co-DP'ed a feature documentary about Oakland’s Wood Street unhoused community that's in post-production. Along with documentaries, I've also made music videos and done corporate work, I’ve shot a few weddings and live productions, and I occasionally take part in my friends' scripted films, nowadays mostly as an editor or running audio.

Photography is a love of mine that predates film, from capturing landscape scenes and animals when I was younger, to shooting on film and experimenting with microscopes and new photography methods more recently.

Music has always been an extremely important part of my life, though I've put very little on this site to date. I've played piano since I was eight years old and began learning guitar in mid-2025. Music theory has always fascinated me; I've spent an ungodly amount of time trying to visualize the way music takes shape in my mind, and I'll put some of that work on this site eventually.

Other hobbies of mine include web design and development (I designed/coded this site from scratch!), font design, 3D modeling and animation, amateur architectural modeling, writing, and pretty much any other art form I can get my hands on. My non-artistic interests include sociology, education, archivism, network technology, and digital rights advocacy.

Among other things, I was featured in this photography showcase in 2021, and this article about Laney College theater's pandemic response the same year.

About this site

I created this website in 2021 as a film and photography portfolio. Since taking a hiatus from more serious film work in 2025, it's become more of a casual home for my various artistic endeavors and an ongoing artistic project of its own.

In the near future, I'll be adding a bunch of old projects. I'll also be adding more new photography projects to the site, some 3D modeling work I'm doing, and at least one more font. In the slightly further future, I may add a section for written work as well.

About AI use

One of the most prevalent themes throughout my work is the constructive cross-section of art and technology, but do not mistake that for a love of generative AI. My main reason for avoiding it in my art is that it depersonalizes anything it touches which inherently decreases artistic value, but there's no shortage of other reasons I oppose the way it's being promoted and implemented (destroys the environment, worsens mental health, streamlines mass surveillance, and accelerates wealth disparity, to name a few). Neural networks are fascinating and have plenty of interesting uses, but generating media from an amalgamation of stolen artwork is not one of them.

Suffice it to say, none of the art on this site, nor the site itself, were made using generative AI.
