About the Halftones
The Halftones are a two-person band consisting of my grandma (Judy July) and late grandpa (Norm Mayell). After he passed, his memorial started a musical trend in my family that led to my grandma and dad leading an effort to make new music as well as cover and remaster old songs. That led to the Norm Memorial album, and it also led to the remastering of the Halftones' self-titled record from the 80s, re-released as Resurrecting the Halftones.
The album and the website are an ode to the music that they wrote and played together. She and my dad, along with producer and childhood friend of my dad's Michael Witwer, they did their best to remaster the old recordings with none of the original material to work with. Included with the 11 songs on the original album are two new songs that Judy wrote in recent years.
About the site
To accompany the remaster, Judy and I designed the Halftones site to be similar to the album cover, with much of the same information that was printed on the CD case. Judy is a graphic designer, so most of my design work was cut out for me, with the only hurdles being converting print design to a responsive web layout. We also included an expanded history of the Halftones as well as some pictures spanning the 40+ years that they made music. I highly recommend checking it out, especially because the entire album is available to listen on the site for free.
